We love baabaazuzu products almost as much as we love how they are made. Snuggling up in one of their hats or scarves feel s like a warm hug on a cold winter’s day. Created entirely from recycled, earth-friendly methods, every baabaazuzu piece is a one-of-a-kind piece that has had its own personal history. Some were old wool sweaters, some were worn wool blankets. Whatever their origin, they were soon transformed into something beautiful and wholly unique. Each blanket or garment is washed in a custom made, industrial washing machine and dryer on a very high heat. This process (called “felting”) greatly shrinks the material into a dense woolen fabric. How tightly woven the fabric is, its weight, stiffness, etc. all determine the final calling for the felted fabric – whether it be a hat, mittens, a jacket or a bag. The fabric is then cut into different shapes, colors and patterns from which to craft totally unique clothing. The possibilities are endless. And the results are nothing short of magical.
Inspiration comes in many forms. For Sue Burns, baabaazuzu founder and lead designer, inspiration came one winter day in the back of her clothes dryer. Had her husband not shrunk some of Sue’s favorite wool sweaters, it could very well be that baabaazuzu would not exist. But the fact is, he did! Out of the tragedy of Sue Burns’ too-small-to-wear, once-adored sweaters came a highly successful company—one of the first “green” or “eco-friendly” clothing and accessories companies before “eco” was even popular! For 17 years, Sue has been rescuing unwanted wool sweaters, blankets and garments items that were steps away from landfills, up-cycling them into one-of-a-kind fashionable accessories. Sue manufactures baabaazuzu products alongside her creative and committed team in Lake Leelanau, Michigan.
